History of the Giza Pyramids

c. 2560 BC

The Great Pyramid of Khufu is built

During the 4th Dynasty, the largest of the Giza pyramids was built as part of Pharaoh Khufu's funerary complex. With an original height of approximately 146.5 meters, it would become the tallest human-made structure for thousands of years.

c. 2530 BC

Pyramid of Khafre

Pharaoh Khafre erected the second great pyramid of the necropolis. Its top still retains part of the original limestone casing.

c. 2500 BC

The Great Sphinx

The construction of the Great Sphinx, a monumental limestone figure with a lion's body and a human head, is usually attributed to the time of Khafre.

c. 2500 BC

Pyramid of Menkaure

The third of the great pyramids was built for Pharaoh Menkaure. It is considerably smaller than those of Khufu and Khafre.

1954

Discovery of Khufu's boats

Next to the Great Pyramid, two pits with ancient boats linked to Khufu's funerary complex were discovered. One of them was reconstructed from more than a thousand pieces of wood.

1979

UNESCO World Heritage

The Giza necropolis was included in the site Memphis and its Necropolis – the Pyramid Fields from Giza to Dahshur, declared a World Heritage Site.

Today

The only ancient wonder still standing

The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World that remains and continues to be one of Egypt's great symbols.
